As an attorney I was involved in hundreds of business and real estate transactions. Also, many of my clients were large business and financial institutions who frequently hired me to collect claims against individual property owners. I was an expert at finding peoples’ assets and the deep pockets to pay me and my clients, but if the person appeared to have no assets my client would frequently instruct me to drop the case. Appearing to own nothing is the best defense against a lawsuit.
I would advise many of my individual clients about this simple defense, but most would ignore my advice. Then at a later date some of these same clients would come to me in a panic needing legal advice, but most of the time it was too late to effectively help them. Unfortunately, most people only go to an attorney once something bad has happened. Because of this I saw many people become financially ruined because they did not take simple steps to protect themselves, their families, and their assets.
